Santa Cruz,The Old Jewish Quarter in Seville

1322
Seville, Spain.
Our group is about to start a tour of the Old Jewish Quarter,
now called Santa Cruz
But first something “special”…
Insight Vacations offer these to their tour groups,
adding “something unexpected” to an outing
In this case it was hot chocolate
and…
Churros.
Like a Spanish doughnut, only much more delicious
For some reason, this cafe/restaurant also offers diners
the opportunity to buy semi-precious stones!
Lydia, our city expert…
This is currently a Church,
however it used to be a synagogue
The streets were not originally designed for cars.
That means that driving here can be a challenge,
especially getting around sharp corners.
The quarter was designed in such a way that if the walls that surround it were breached,
the invaders would get lost in the maze of streets.
In front of this famous Flamenco theatre there used to be a Mosque
that became a Synagogue and then a Church…
and that unfortunately burned down!
This is the first time I had noticed that the underside of the balconies were tiled
Part of the wall that surrounded the Quarter
Seville is rich in Opera history,
this balcony is supposedly to be where Bizet got inspiration for Carmen
Or perhaps not…
But it makes for a good story
After her death,Carmen was discovered here,
Plaza Du Toros,
The Seville Bullring.
Bull fighting is no longer as popular as it used to be.
In fact, young Spanish boys now want to be soccer players when they grow up
Tom, one of our group, interacting with a “local”
There are a plethora of restaurants and bars in this area.
Visitors are never at a loss for choice…
Homesick…
This particular product comes from South Africa
and is currently not grown anywhere else in the world.
The Cathedral of Seville..
Truly spectacular.
It was closed when we arrived due to the funeral of the Duchess of Alba
The bell tower
There was a market of nativity scenes and models on sale.
This extensive collection is of the highest quality
and guaranteed to make a success of any Christmas celebrations.
There were just too many to photograph
There are trams that run up and down this street.
The cathedral dominates the skyline.
As the sun sets, it is time to head off to our hotel
and DINNER!
My travelling companions.
Justin, the Gnome, Kwand-hare
and the “travelling heart” from my daughter…
“Travel & Things” was an entrant in this competition.
