The first ‘In conversation with’… of 2025.
I chatted with Wilfred Mole and Dave Richardson about Sandstone Estates and what guest can expect.
The Sandstone Heritage Trust is a private Preservation initiative established on a commercial farm in the Eastern Free State in South Africa. The present owners purchased the farm from the Wille family in 1995.
The farm has been in the continuous ownership of the Willes since the 1840s, which means the farm has only had two owners in 170 years. The arable farmland along the little Caledon River which constitutes the official border between South Africa and Lesotho is rich in agricultural potential.
It is a particularly beautiful part of South Africa with sandstone outcrops nestling under the towering Maluti Mountains which sit high above the Drakensberg range. It is an area where farming has proceeded quietly using traditional methods for centuries. To find out more, use this link: https://www.sandstone-estates.com/index.php/about-us
I chat with Johan about my recent trip with him to the Celebration of the Cherry Harvest near Ficksburg in the Free State. What does the company offer?
A variety of curated tours, where participants travel in their own vehicles in a convoy along the highways and byways of Southern Africa! To quote their website: Platteland Tours take people on the back roads, through small towns and visit interesting places on Self-Drive Guided Road Trips to explore South Africa.
Drive your own vehicle – NO 4×4’s needed. It was a first for me and it certainly will not be the last ( my wife and I have already booked the 7-day tour to Namaqualand to see (hopefully) the flowers in 2025! The Buck that Buries its Poo. Published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. Everything you wanted to know about wildlife facts and trivia and then some.
Quinton has had decades of experience and he has written this book, not as a cold factual tome, but as a fun book to be delved into when the reader is looking for something just that little bit ‘different’.
A must for every nature lover. Highly recommended.( Spoiler alert; the buck mentioned in the title is the Steenbok)
