The images in this post were all taken at Africa on Foot, a Sun Destinations property.
A young male caught in the light of the early morning sun. Even though there are far more species other than the BIG 5, it is still the cats (lion and leopard) that attract the most attention.
Most lion sightings consist of either single or multiple animals lying in the shade of a tree sleeping…which they can do for up to 20 hours.
So when you find them on the move, you hope there will be action or excitement if you follow for long enough.
In this particular instance, there was a large herd of buffalo close by that this small pride were off to investigate.
Looking like a meal would be appreciated.
Lions do not have a great success rate when it comes to trying to take down prey.
They seem to miss more than they catch, hence him looking somewhat thin.
FYI:
Although lions are apex predators, their hunting success rate depends on the number of animals involved. A single lion hunting in daylight has a success rate of about 17-19%, but this increases to 30% when they hunt as a pride.
This female was very focused.
Trying to keep her eyes on the buffalo herd as well as the other members of her pride.
FYI.
African lions have been admired throughout history as symbols of courage and strength.
OH bloody hell! Do I have to work for my food?

Bonding time…

Perhaps wondering if we would make a half-decent meal?
All the hair around the ears enables lions to pin-point where sound is coming from
In humans, excessive ear hair only appears in your post-retirement years and is just a nuisance.
The boys are back in town…
Did you know ?
A lion’s roar can be heard up to five kilometres away.
Time to spring the trap.
Lions are sentient beings – they think, feel, and have unique personalities. Many animal sentience scientists suspect that lions are the most intelligent big cats. They think this because, unlike most big cats, lions live in a pride, meaning they have to work as a cohesive whole in order to figure out how to work together.
Can you do this?
FYI: According to a study published in Dysphagia, only 14.7% of the human population can do a clover tongue, while less than 50% can do this with theirs.
Breakfast is served!
The pride successfully separated a youngster from the buffalo herd and by the time we caught up with them, they were already enjoying the fruits of their labour.
