Not so much testing the water as testing the wind to see what might be lurking in the vegetation that surrounds this waterhole.
Ears are relaxed, and therefore, this individual is not stressed.
Like ebony and ivory on a piano keyboard, animals seem to have a waterhole truce where certain species will share this life-giving necessity.
That being said, all that can change in a heartbeat when predators appear or if the is a drought and there is only a small amount of water to slake the thirst of many.
What ARE you looking at? Giraffe, because of the awkward way they drink, have to be extremely cautious before getting down to the water.
I have watched a giraffe try for 20 minutes, before giving up and walking away because they felt that there might be danger close by.
Finally! And when this moment occurs, they can drink for the longest time, making the most of the opportunity.
This individual was part of a small dazzle of zebra that came down to share the waterhole.
And then the elephants arrived. The kudu in the background could only watch and wonder why they were all crowded into one particular spot. Especially since there was space for everyone!
The female kudu was joined by a large male who took full advantage of the scrum that was taking place on the near side of the waterhole.
A tender moment between siblings(?) or at very least relatives.
“I am free…free at last”, as this youngster took off to join a part of the herd that was moving off to feed.
Elephants do not like to share water. And this juvenile thought he would catch and teach the impala a lesson.
The chase failed as the impala was able to jump over the log…and elephants cannot jump.
Both survived to enjoy another day.
