The highlight of my visit to Sandstone Estates.
Between 1971 and 1975 I worked at the South African Railways and Harbours completing my apprenticeship as an electrician, so steam trains have a special place in my heart.
This train runs on the property several times a day allowing guests to enjoy the feel and excitement of travelling behind a steam engine.
It was the train and not the planes that spooked the horses.
Meanwhile, above our heads, this was playing out…
Out on a photo bombing run?
Where were Snoopy and the Red Baron when you needed them?
Some fun facts about biplanes:
Most of the first aeroplanes were biplanes, including the Wright Brothers’ famous flying machine, making them the pioneers of powered flight in the early 20th century.
Biplanes are highly manoeuvrable due to their wing configuration, which makes them popular for aerobatics and stunt flying today.
What is a US Army plane doing in the skies above the Northern Free State?
You might well ask.
It is just one of the aircraft that have been lovingly restored and is flown at Sandstone as and when the pilot has the time.
For a fee, visitors can become passengers and will leave with exciting tales to tell.
Off we go into the wild blue yonder.
Formation flying at its most impressive.
Sliver against a dark and threatening sky. Luckily for both he pilot and those of us on the ground the rain held off until we were leaving to return to the farm where we were staying.
And then there were two.
A final fly-by as the aircraft and the train all headed back to the airfield and the station.
What a wonderful day and the experience comes highly recommended.
