Madagascar has a unique selection of mammals that are found nowhere else in the world.

There are more than 100 species of lemurs to be found on the island. This, believe it or not, is a Black Lemur. Although only the males are black! The females look like a different species, as they are larger than the males and have a different colouring altogether.

Lizards abound in the leaf litter that covers the forest floor.

Madagascar is home to more than 210 species of lizards. These include chameleons, geckos, skinks, and iguanids.

There are more than 7000 species of lizards in the world. They can be found on every continent except Antarctica.

The rest of this Boa Constrictor was hidden in the roots of a tree.

But given the size of its head, I am sure it was enormous.

Madagascar is home to more than 100 species of chameleon, which equates to more than half of the world’s chameleon species.

From tiny chameleons to huge and ancient tortoises!

This is the only non-indigenous reptile on the island.

We found this one in a wildlife park and it was supposedly brought in decades ago by humans.

Luckily, they seem to have remained contained and have not taken over the waterways and water sources.

All hail King Julian. The Ring-tailed Lemur is probably the best-known of all the species that can be found on the island.

And all thanks to the Madagascar movie franchise.

Another lizard, well disguised in the undergrowth.

A slug of some sort? Or a naked/homeless snail?

This male gecko is busy regrowing its tail…
