Not snakes on a plane… Spotted Bush snake at the Umlani Bushcamp tree house.

From the official website: For exclusive tranquillity there is a tree house about 2.5 kms from the camp overlooking a dam, where we can leave you for an hour or two with blankets and big comfortable pillows as well as a cooler box with drinks.

When I climbed up the ladder leading to the platform that is the Tree House, I discovered a Spotted Bush snake enjoying a meal very close to where I was. This movie title immediately came to mind.

I am not NEARLY as cool as Samuel.L. Jackson, but the words that came out of my mouth while at eye level with the reptile were similar to those he uttered in the movie, which I will NOT repeat in this post.

I really did not want to disturb the snake as they often regurgitate their meal if stressed and I did not want that to happen.

So I clung to the ladder at a distance and tried to focus my camera as best I could.

Spotted bush snakes are mostly found in trees in bush and forest areas, where they hunt lizards and tree frogs.

They are excellent climbers and swimmers, have very good eyesight, and are highly alert snakes.

They are not territorial and will roam great distances in search of food.

Their diet consists of Geckos, chameleons or as was the case here, a tree frog.

Going…

I assumed that the liquid that was being extruded was coming from the frog.

Going…

Too late to cross your fingers and crossing your legs just makes the frog slip down easier.

Just a tad more to go.

All gone…

Given its colouration and size, this snake is sometimes confused with a Boomslang.

But this snake is non-venomous whereas the Boomslang is one of South Africa’s most venomous snake species.

The average snout-to-vent length is 60–90 cm

The Spotted Bush snake has no venom and is therefore harmless.

It will strike frantically if cornered and it will only bite if grabbed, or restrained.

Bite punctures will bleed freely and may itch.
