Friends who moved to Sabie a couple of years ago renovated this cottage in their garden and turned it into a wonderfully private, relaxing space for guests to utilize as a base while they explore the region.
It is close enough to and yet far enough away from the hubbub of Sabie not to make you feel that you are in the centre of town. (Although it is a small town, it can generate hubbub.)
It is set at the rear of the property, hence the traffic noise is not intrusive.
The cottage is self-catering; however, several restaurants are within a quick drive. Visitors need to be aware that the local traffic department waits for unsuspecting travellers who do not obey stop signs or the speed limits.
For wildlife enthusiasts the iconic Kruger National Park is only 60km away.
One of the major attractions is the Panorama Route which includes Mac Mac Falls, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window and the Blyde River Canyon.
It is a spacious single room that has this large bed as the main feature.
The comfortable linen allows for relaxed sleep, and there is enough space at the foot of the bed to use as a seating area.
The hanging rail is on wheels so that can moved to a position that suits the guests best.
A fridge and kettle, as well as a well-stocked coffee and tea station, are on hand to keep guests hydrated.
The fridge can be used to store takeaway food and snacks, especially chocolate during the hot summer months.
Bed knobs and broomsticks.
I certainly found the former and I did not need to look for the latter.
It has been a while since I slept in a bed of this design. It adds to the overall ambience of the room.
Wonderful towels…neatly laid out and so fluffy that I almost did not want to disturb them.
This is the colour that guest towels SHOULD be. White can be daunting if you are uncertain of how dirty you are after a day of mountain biking or hiking through the nearby plantations.
The towels were not treated with a softener or dried in a tumble dryer, making them just rough enough to be comfortable and to give guests a mini massage at the same time.
The en-suite bathroom has a shower, toilet and single basin.
More than enough to satisfy the traveller in search of the proverbial 3 S’s…I will leave those to your imagination.
The stairs that lead to and from the main house and the parking area.
When I say ‘parking area’ it is merely a spot in front of the garage…not a huge lot with dozens of vehicles.
Guests have access to the family pool which is only a few paces from the front door of the cottage.
This stopover is highly recommended for single travellers or couples looking to spend an affordable few days in the area.
A mini-break to ease the stress of returning to the rat race as we all know that the rats ARE winning.
Some of the nearby towns are:
Hazyview: 45km.
Graskop: 30km and you can get the BEST pancakes there.
Pilgrim’s Rest: 35km. I have been reliably informed that this small town has undergone a transformation and is worth a visit.
