We dive back into the Dive Inn Guest House in Pongola.

Once again Travel & Things is back at this stunning guest house in Pongola. I had found it by accident a year ago on a return trip from the KZN north coast and my wife and I liked it so much that we decided to stay there once again on our way to that same stretch of coast earlier this year.

Although almost a year had passed, nothing seems to have been changed behind the high grey exterior wall and the remote-controlled entrance gate. And why should it? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

The fountain, when lit, brings a completely different ambience to the property. One of tranquillity that pervades the property and keeps guests returning on a regular basis.

The aforementioned front gate can be seen through the ‘famous’ dolphin statue that is outside the main reception area.

We were accommodated in the same room that we had previously stayed in as the manager, Gerdiri, remembered that we had enjoyed staying there. It still has the hottest water in the shortest time. And a tv that actually works without needing a BSc degree to operate.

A view as we drove in…For first time guests, this can be an exciting moment for it is so completely different to Pongola outside of the walls as well as what lies in wait inside the main reception building and beyond.

This lounge was “out of bounds” due to COVID protocols during our previous visit, but it seems that it is being used once again. A great space that makes you feel that you ARE at a dive lodge on the coast.

Our room, bright, airy and impeccably clean.

A whole range of products to try in the shower…as well as a chocolate on the towel to welcome us!

The chess set seems to have gained a gazebo, but I might be wrong…

The pool was sparkling and inviting and no sooner had we arrived and climbed out of an air-conditioned car into the heat and humidity of this town than my wife had changed into a bathing costume and was trying out the cool, clear water.

Breakfast( included in the room rate) and dinner (by arrangement) are served here. It is a welcoming dining room and the staff are attentive, but not intrusive.

Both the dinner and the breakfast were generous helpings and delicious, and it is much easier to order dinner than to venture out into town to search for fast food or a restaurant, although that is an option.

My Breakfast of Champions. My only ‘complaint’ is who decided that 3 rashers of bacon is a portion? They should be taken to task in the most severe way. Bacon should never be rationed, but should be readily available to guests in whatever quantity they desire!

I, for one, would gladly swap a breakfast sausage for more rashers of crispy bacon.

After breakfast, it was a warm goodbye and we were off on the second part of our road trip which would take us through Jozini, along more than 40km of wet gravel road to Thonga Beach lodge which was to be the headline stay of the trip.
