While cleaning up the hard drive on my laptop, I discovered a plethora of photographs stored in ‘hidden’ Google Photo albums. I was totally unaware of their existence and was excited to delve into them to see what Google had chosen to store. Here are some of the more interesting images…
An African Wild cat…Returning to a lodge at the end of an afternoon game drive, we saw two pairs of eyes glinting on the side of the road. The consensus on the vehicle was scrub hares until this cat exploded out of the long grass chasing the aforementioned hare. The chase was over very quickly and to the victor the spoils. We stayed at a distance for only a short while so as not to disturb the cat too much as it finished off its meal.
A female Golden Orb spider…the males are so tiny that can barely be seen on the web. The silk that these spiders produce has a stronger tensile strength than steel of the same diameter. Finding one of these on an early morning game walk usually involves walking into it and then doing a happy dance to try and extricate yourself while those that did not get caught stand by and laugh.
A well-concealed Flap-neck Cameleon…Many field guides have a trick to finding chameleons that are hidden in leafy branches. Especially at night, when they are almost invisible to the untrained eyes of the guests. This particular individual I had followed as it had walked across the road and then ‘vanished’ into the foliage.
Baby elephant walk…One day this youngster will be as big as its Mom. When they are this small they have to learn how to utilize their trunks which can be entertaining to watch. They are also inquisitive and might well approach a vehicle, so caution needs to be exercised when near a breeding herd.
“You can’t rollerskate in a buffalo herd” are the lyrics of an old Roger Miller country song. Late afternoon at a waterhole, the dust and the fading light made for this striking image.
Arrow-marked Babbler, one of the loudest birds in the bush. Often found in and around lodges as they are always on the lookout for free food.
A Honeybadger on a mission. These fierce animals believe that inside their small body hides a lion. They are known for their tenacious nature and will fearlessly attack large predators if they believe that they are being threatened.
A coalition of cheetah brothers. Driving from the border post to a camp in Botswana, I discovered these individuals. Always great to see cheetah out on the open plain and in hunting mode.
A replay of the CHOMP advert? Back in 1970 Cadbury’s chocolate flighted an iconic advert that features father and son hippos. The tag line was “Oh, Big Mouth”. The ad was front of mind when I pressed the shutter on these two.
This is THAT advert…
Always sleep with one eye open? Even if you believe that predators are asleep, they are in all probability awake enough to know what is happening around them.
