Probably our most iconic bird…
The African Fish Eagle.
Often the cry of this bird can be heard before it can be seen
and it seems to “define” Africa.
Those who hear and experience it will not be left unmoved.
Most of these sighting took place close to this dam.
This large dam in Marakele National Park is a great spot for bird sightings.
An African Darter catching some sun…
These birds can often be found in this spreadeagled position
in the early morning or late afternoons.
This is a first for me…
A Bennett’s Woodpecker.
A juvenile Yellow -Billed Kite hiding in amongst the dry branches
A Blacksmiths Lapwing (previously a Plover).
This bird can be found in urban environments,
often on the grass verges on the sides of busy roads.
In the wild, their call is almost as raucous as that of the Grey Go-Away bird.
A “squadron or flock” of Little Egrets
heading off in the early morning light.
Being watched by a Little Sparrowhawk…
A pair of White -fronted Bee-eaters.
One of which had caught a bee, but decided NOT to share it!
The insect vanished in a flash.
Time to take off and head in search of a meal.
The wing span of a female eagle is 2.4m,
while the male is slightly smaller at 2.2m.
With an impressive wing span like that,
one would assume that it was the largest South African eagle.
But you would be wrong!
That title belongs to the hefty Martial Eagle.
