Black Rhino Lodge. Bird sightings. Pilanesberg National Park. North West Province.

While you are looking upwards for birds,
make certain that you keep an eye out for what might
be behind your game drive vehicle!
This bull Elephant was two vehicles away from us and was in musth.
For those who don’t know, this is when a bull elephant
is at his most dangerous, as the condition precedes attempts at mating.
Dribbling urine and the “aroma” that accompanies this state
is just one of the signs to look out for.

Yellow-billed Hornbill.
The Jester of the Bushveld.
Their very recognisable call can be heard over long distances.
This species, together with warthogs,
was made popular by “The Lion King”.
And speaking of the lion king…
Even though this posting focuses of birds,
I have to pay homage to the “King of the Jungle”,
even if he IS lying in a pile of rhino dung!

This White Bellied  Sunbird was in a tree near
where the lion was relaxing.
Part of the rest of the pride…
on the opposite side of the dam to where we were parked.
This Namaqua Dove was just in front of our vehicle
at the same dam.

A Pale Chanting Goshawk watches from the top of a tree.
A great vantage point to look for possible prey.
Southern Pied Babbler…
one of my favourite of the Babbler species.
Easy to spot and identify due to the bright white plumage.
I did spend time at the hide alongside the dam at the lodge,
but although no birds appeared, this family of Kudu did.
Up close and personal…
A Spotted Thick knee poses for my lens
A White faced Owl caught in the spotlight
on our game drive vehicle.
An owl sighting is always an exciting way to end of an evening drive.
Our accommodation at the Lodge.
One of the largest rooms that I have stayed in for a while.
Well appointed with a very comfortable bed.
the latter being MOST welcome after a day of game drives and food.
Night all…

I have worn these shoes in the jungles of India
and on the beaches of Croatia.
Not to mention, many game reserves in Africa.
They are probably the most comfortable pair of shoes
that I have ever owned.

A new “tool” in my camera bag.
This locally made product was indispensable when using a long lens.
The ball and socket might look simple…and it is,
which is why it should be in the gear bag of every serious photographer.
This locally made, deceptively simple device is ideal
for tracking birds in flight or animals in motion.
The base can be used on a beanbag or a tripod,
with the ball being fitted to the camera.
The simplicity of the device allows to to move from supported
to hand held in a fluid motion.
There is also a version that can be used on a car window.
