While you are looking upwards for birds,
make certain that you keep an eye out for what might
be behind your game drive vehicle!
This bull Elephant was two vehicles away from us and was in musth.
For those who don’t know, this is when a bull elephant
is at his most dangerous, as the condition precedes attempts at mating.
Dribbling urine and the “aroma” that accompanies this state
is just one of the signs to look out for.
Yellow-billed Hornbill.
The Jester of the Bushveld.
Their very recognisable call can be heard over long distances.
This species, together with warthogs,
was made popular by “The Lion King”.
And speaking of the lion king…
Even though this posting focuses of birds,
I have to pay homage to the “King of the Jungle”,
even if he IS lying in a pile of rhino dung!
This White Bellied Sunbird was in a tree near
where the lion was relaxing.

This Namaqua Dove was just in front of our vehicle
at the same dam.
A Pale Chanting Goshawk watches from the top of a tree.
A great vantage point to look for possible prey.
Southern Pied Babbler…
one of my favourite of the Babbler species.
Easy to spot and identify due to the bright white plumage.
I did spend time at the hide alongside the dam at the lodge,
but although no birds appeared, this family of Kudu did.

An owl sighting is always an exciting way to end of an evening drive.
