This is Ali, the receptionist at
Emerson on Hurumzi…the hotel we stayed at.
From morning till evening,
this was the smiling face that greeted us.
He was also a mine of information when it came to
finding out about where to shop or the local customs.
There were 69 stairs from the reception to our floor.
But what awaited us, was worth every one climbed!
It was so hot and humid that we never turned the hot water on.
This “outdoor” shower was an absolute blessing
and was used several times a day.
Not that it helped to cool us down.
A view of our room from the foot of the bed.
Our room had a small balcony, and this was what greeted us every morning.
The steeple in the centre belonged to a Hindu Temple,
which had a bell ringing ceremony every day,
twice a day.
This is what it sounded like:

We loved this statue outside our room.
It was not for sale,
but we were able to find something similar at a local shop
Some of the art work on the walls.
They added an authentic Zanzibari touch to the decor
The corner of room “West”…

Hand-washing is offered both before and after meals.
They use warm rose water which leaves your hands
smelling like Turkish delight.
Dinner on our first night…
Fish for my wife, and goat stew for me.
Local musicians were on hand to serenade guests
A view from the roof top restaurant.
This area is about to undergo a refurbishment,
and might therefore not look like this for much longer
Cannot get the sunset?
Then photograph someone taking a photograph of the event.
Time for a nightcap?

I got to meet Farouk Abdel,
he was responsible for designing the interiors of the rooms at the hotel.
This is what he had to say…

Saleh, our MOST friendly and accommodating waiter.
It was a pleasure having him explain the breakfast menu every morning
Time for bed…
