Johannesburg to Cape Town road trip…
Overnight stay
The N1 from Johannesburg towards Hanover.
Mostly dead flat and boring to drive.
It needs THIS music to keep you awake and alert…

We were therefore VERY glad to reach our overnight destination,
the Bun Clody Guest House in Hanover, Northern Cape.
It is named after Bunclody (formally Newtownbarry)
a small town on the River Slaney in Wexford Ireland.
Hanover purports to be the centre of South Africa.
Midway from Johannesburg to Cape Town,
it is also centrally positioned between Cape Town and Durban.
And equidistant between Port Elizabeth and Upington.
Impressive?
Winburg told us the same story when we stayed over in 2009,
but we were able to discredit their claim

And if those statistics were not enough…
It is home to our WONDERFUL hosts,
Danie and Tossie Stander.
Jayne and I  have “adopted” them!

This was Jayne’s room.
Tossie told her in no uncertain terms that she was to sleep in the double bed!

Quirky tie backs that have acorns embossed on them.
Why?
Because Hanover was the first “dorp” to have trees planted in the main street.
And what tress were they?
Oak Trees.

My room…
I too was instructed to sleep in the “big” bed.
I was also warned to use the Peaceful Sleep aerosol to keep pesky mozzies at bay.
But did I listen…
NO.
Was I awoken by the Kamikaze whining of said mozzies?
YES.
Did I then use the aerosol?
YES

The bathroom had a shower and a toilet.
And for the first time I had steps leading into the stall.
This is what makes visits to “small town” South African different
and memorable.

There are six rooms in this guest house.
However, should this be full, don’t panic.
Tossie and Danie own several other guest houses in the town.

This is where we, together with the other guests, enjoyed dinner and breakfast

No guest house would be complete without a cat.
This one wandered in off the street…and stayed.

And outside, in the vast garden I stumbled upon these.
Only one of the fruit and vegetable species grown for “the table”

NOTHING goes to waste on this property.
I can attest to the fact that my new “Tannie”,
Tossie, makes great watermelon preserve

Petrus, bringing in a wheelbarrow of mielies (corn).
I should imagine that this will end up on the lunch/dinner menu

Danie told me the story of how this church organ from Johannesburg
ended up in a corner of their lounge in Hanover.
I could tell you the story, but he does it much better.
You will HAVE to visit Hanover to hear him tell the tale
and play a couple of chords.
