We dock in Kusadasi…
Off to spend the day ashore.
The spectacular ruins at Ephesus.
Built in the 10th century BC
Proves that one of us were actually there.
My wife, using an umbrella she bought in New Zealand…
and wearing a shirt that she got at Sabi Sabi game reserve in South Africa
Ephesus has been inhabited by many civilizations
Greek, Roman and Turkish.
Each adding its own legacy
When politicians were replaced (for whatever reason),
only the heads on the statues were changed.
More cost effective…
After 1000’s of years, these columns are still supportive
Beautiful mosaic floors/pavements have been uncovered
An example of a terrace house.
There is currently a major dig underway to uncover an entire hillside of these
Public toilets…
NO privacy.
Must have been interesting to sit and chat.
I am told that because there was water flowing underneath,
the smell was negligible
A “stock-pile” of building material?
I wish I knew what this sign represented.
Seeing that Ephesus was partly destroyed by an earthquake in 614 AD,
perhaps this was an “earthquake warning”?
Can you imagine playing in an amphitheater like this?
Even if you were a gladiator that was going to die…
I am certain that none of them would have been entombed in a sarcophagus as ornate as this
There are still many ruins that have not been uncovered
Ephesus was one of the seven churches of Asia that are cited in the Book of Revelation. The Gospel of John may have been written here.
“Give me a kiss”…
We ended our tour at this World Heritage Site.
The Temple of Artemis, completed in 550 BC
From the past back into the present.
It was a REALLY warm day in Kusadasi
The man in the middle could be seen as the Nelson Mandela of Turkey
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was a Turkish army officer, reformist statesman,
and the first President of Turkey.
He is credited with being the founder of the Republic of Turkey.
His surname, Atatürk (meaning “Father of the Turks”), was granted to him in 1934
and forbidden to any other person by the Turkish parliament.
Our guide/driver for our day in Kusadasi was Mr. Suleyman.
Many thanks to the local port agent, Mr Mert for organizing the outing.
