Gary was born on 14 August, 1950 in Tacoma.
One my all time favourite single panel cartoonists…
And for no onter reason other than my admiration of his work
and the fact that I am re-reading his books currently
I post this today…
His Far Side single panel cartoons were published in more than 900 newspapers
and ran for 15 years
My collection of Far Side books are re-read constantly…
each time I find something new to chortle over…
as I am currently
This cartoon caused a lot of controversy when it was first published,
However, Jane Goodall felt that this gave her “cred”…
She went on to write the foreword “Far Side Gallery 5” explaining her side of the story.
The t-shirt with this on it still sells to raise money for her Institute
The vulture in the hat became my first tattoo…
I wanted wildlife and something “country”
and I believed(and still do) that this as the perfect combination…
Because of my interest in wildlife,
his cartoons that feature animals have a special meaning for me.
I believe that if we could eavesdrop on their conversations,
they would sound EXACTLY as he has portrayed them.
The only problem with this cartoon is that we do not get gophers in Africa.
But that is a minor quibble…
It is not the fact that an Elephant is able to use a pay-phone that makes me laugh…
It is the fact that he found a working one that is funny…
If only animals COULD watch nature shows…
would they perceive all the mating rituals as porn?
I believe that when humans are on game drives looking out for animals,
the animals are out looking for us…
Pointing us out to their partners/offspring and telling tales about their encounters with us
Larson stopped drawing on 1 January,1995…
But his cartoons and legacy live on.We all have a favourite Larson cartoon…
…this is mine.
