Pin-tailed Whydah…king of the hover.

2502

I don’t normally dedicate an entire posting to a single species of bird…

However, the Pin-tailed Whydah (Vidua macroura) is certainly worth it

The resident male’s “harem”

And the “King of hover” makes his entrance!

It almost looks as if I have photo-shopped a branch out, but no such trickery has been used.

Trying to choose a mate?

The males are VERY territorial and will chase away birds much larger than themselves

Displaying for the rather drab females…

The display consists of long bouts of “hovering” while trying to attract the attention of a single female

Many to choose from!

a mid-air pose

Just to prove that he did not spend the whole morning in the air…

a wide shot for perspective.

SPOTTED…

My look what a pretty boy I am…

time to show off…

She is still here, so perhaps she IS interested…

In for the “kill”…

This has to be my favourite image…
