On a recent visit to the Sea Point promenade I came across this wonderful public art project…
With the mountain as a backdrop, the young girl tries to fly…
I found the face on this young girl poignant and extremely lifelike…I found that from the very first statue I had a lump in my throat…
The dragon fly was the protagonist in this gentle interaction…
Looking to see where it has gone to…
The young girl and the dragon fly come face to face…
and once again it vanishes…
This is my favourite of the 18 sculptures on display…well actually 17 currently, but more of that later
the plaque tells it all…
The artist told me that it took her three attempts to capture the correct expression…
the young girl tries to get the dragon fly back
You will notice an empty plinth…sculpture 15 has been removed by persons unknown. The sculptor, Marieke Prinsloo-Rowe was, naturally, upset.I suggested that the person that took it,loved the work so much that they were prepared to go to jail/face a hefty fine in order to have it
notice that the wing tips have turned into hands…
the young girl’s arms have taken on dragon fly like characteristics …
UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO REPEATED VANDALISM,THE STATUES HAVE NOW BEEN REMOVED!
I find it shameful that due to the actions of a few miscreants the pleasure of these statues will be denied to the many.Cape Town, hang your head in shame!
