Although I had arrived at the Eastern airstrip, Buffalo Ridge is in the Western sector of the park…I was taken there via this gate to show me an entrance I had not visited before.
This statue is a tribute to one of the local chiefs that was involved in the Anglo Boer war…part of which was fought in this area.In the building in the background is a small “museum” that houses some maps that depict the fighting that took place in the area.
A plaque to commemorate the Battle of Derdepoort.
Always a welcome sign…
This lodge was built and is staffed by the local community…
The main lodge building is accessed by this walkway…
And a welcome drink was exactly that…cool and welcoming on a very hot day..
The building is set on three level, the lower being the lounge
The upper level takes you to the dining room and then on to the pool
Another view of the lounge
I really enjoy discovering “artifacts”…
I have never actually seen a Buffalo exactly like this, but this bright design certainly added something the the decor
Old suitcases always make for interesting “reading” when they still have labels attached
The pool was very inviting but unfortunately I did not get an opportunity to use it…perhaps on my next visit?
The paths to the rooms are meticulously maintained
And large numbers make it easy to find your accommodation…there are eight rooms sleeping sixteen guests.
The bathroom…or should I say shower-room, as non of the accommodation have baths
The bed decor…again adding something different…
A good size make-up/work table…
By opening the door, the shower becomes both indoor and outdoor at the same time…very clever
Lots of natural stone work allows the rooms to blend in
I just like the look of this…
Stair balustrades were make out of local hard-wood…
Being served pre-lunch drinks by the Lodge manager…
There are board games available to while away the time between eating and game drives
If I had not flown into Madikwe, this dresser might just have ended up in the trunk of my car!
With this one following close behind…
The tables might look plain but the food was superb
Buffalo Ridge is child friendly as this young Italian guest found out…he slept in the reception area while his parents were having lunch…
The community that run the lodge had had to overcome many challenges in order to get it established and to keep it viable and profitable. Next time you visit Madikwe pay them a visit…you will not be disappointed.
