Bang the drum(s)...the South African Tattoo was in town

There is “something” about the sound of massed pipe bands and drums that unlocks a visceral feeling within me…perhaps I have some Scottish in me?

The evening performance was opened by this group and it certainly set the tone for the entertainment that was to follow…

It seems that the tuba is only used in marching bands and “proper” orchestras…or perhaps I am wrong? There might be an all tuba band that I have not heard of…

This is my favourite image from the evening…even if our military are not currently seeing active service, they are still active…

“Ooch Jimmy”! Pipes and drums…

Our military like I have never seen them before…

Believe it our not…these are commissioned officers! Never thought I would see the day…the old guard must be spinning in their graves!

More tubas…perhaps they were breeding backstage?

This was part of the Ceremonial Guard that plays on State occasions…looks like the trumpet player might explode!

And what would a Tattoo be without Highland dancers…

and here are some of them…

accompanied by this stunning electric group called ‘Haggis and Bong’…no comment!

this drill group comes from New Zealand and they certainly had the crowd enthralled with their performance…

The evening was rounded off with the singing of the National anthem

And the unfurling of the largest South African flag I have ever seen…

This was the fourth event and the producers have promised that they will be back in 2012

and, of course, we will be there to record it!
