11 Worcester on Durban...the colony survives

Situated just off Somerset street, this guest-house is close enough to the centre of town to walk there, but just far enough away from the noise so that you feel as is you are in the country.

The colony of Weaver birds in the garden in front of the main house certainly give the impression that the rural country-side is not too far away

When we decided to visit Grahamstown for the National Arts Festival we knew that we would be pressed for accommodation as it tends to be sold out months in advance.

I turned to the Internet and found this delightful property belonging to Sally Price-Smith and her husband.

This is the entrance to the “Blue room” where we spent our stay. I did wonder about the placement of the door knob as I had visions of “small people” servicing the room while we were out…

Aloes abound in the garden and if you have ever been to the Eastern Cape then you will understand that they grow in abundance here. They add an indigenous touch to what could otherwise be a property that could be in an English country-side.

The rear of the main house has been converted into suits for rent of various sizes, depending on the number of guests that need to be accommodated. From what I could gather our room was the smallest, but was by no means cramped or uncomfortable.

Aside from heated towel rails in the bathroom(or to be more correct, shower room, as there was only a shower) there were more plugs than I have ever found in a room before…
As we were there in winter the underfloor heating was a most welcome bonus.
The bed was very comfortable and the pillows met my VERY demanding standards…and for that reason I award the property my highly sought after *Best pillow award*!

Little touches and attention to detail made our stay a most pleasant one and we would recommend 11 Worcester very highly
